Virgin Comics Turns to Liquid

It’s the last panel for Virgin Comics, the publishing label formed in 2005 by filmmaker Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth), Virgin Enterprises head Sir Richard Branson, author Deepak Chopra and South Asian comic publisher Gotham Entertainment Group LLC. The imprint will now be known as Liquid Comics following a buy-out by the management team of Gotham Chopra, Sharad Devarajan and Suresh Seetharaman. Now out from under the Virgin Group umbrella, the entity will continue to develop digital, film, animation and gaming projects for its original properties.

Based in New York, Liquid will reportedly shut down the Virgin Comics headquarters in New York and set up shop in Los Angeles. Virgin Comics initially set its sights on telling stories with Indian appeal, but sought to capture a bigger share of the comics market by forming collaborations with Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, such renowned filmmakers as John Woo (Face/Off), Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) and Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), and actors including Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Cage and porn star Jenna Jameson. Still, sales haven’t met expectations.

Some of Virgin Comics’ more high-profile properties were set up as movies at various production companies, Hollywood studios and broadcasters including Warner Bros., New Regency, Sony Online Entertainment, SCI FI Channel, Studio 18 and UTV. None of these films and series have yet been produced, but Liquid says it plans to proceed with a number of them. Announcements regarding theses projects are expected soon.
