The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) will present ‘Master Class:Richard Williams in Conversation with John Canemaker’ on Monday, Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Roy and Niuta Titus 2 Theater. Attendees will listen as three-time Academy Award winner Richard Williams discusses his long and influential career with fellow Oscar winner and animator John Canemaker.
Williams was awarded Oscars for Special Achievement and for Visual Effects as director of animation for the 1988 Disney favorite Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and for his 1971 short film A Christmas Carol. He has worked with a number of animators from Disney’s ‘Golden Age,’ including Grim Natwick (Snow White), Art Babbitt (Fantasia) and Ken Harris (Bugs Bunny), and also learned from toon legnds Milt Kahl (Pinocchio, The Jungle Book) and Frank Thomas (Bambi, Cinderella). The knowledge Wiliams acquired is distilled in his bestselling book, The Animator’s Survival Kit, which has imspired a series of instructional DVD master classes.
The discussion with Canemaker will feature clips from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, The Charge of the Light Brigade, A Christmas Carol, Raggedy Ann & Andy, the animated titles from The Return of the Pink Panther, various award-winning commercials and segments from The Animator’s Survival Kit.
