Schroder Wrangles Hellhounds

Former child star and NYPD Blue actor Rick Schroder has traded in his silver spoons and policeman’s badge for a director’s chair and some nasty CG-animated pooches. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he is directing a SCI FI Channel original movie titled Hellhounds. A co-production of Canada’s Muse Ent. and Romania’s S.C. Studiourile Media Pro, the telepic begins principal photography next week in Romania and will air sometime next year. RHI is handling distribution.

Hellhounds takes place 500 B.C. and stars Scott Elrod (Men in Trees) as a Greek warrior who must take on the hellhounds of Hades to rescue his bride from the Underworld. Muse’s Michael Prupas is exec producing along with RHI Ent.’s Robert Halmi Sr. and Robert Halmi Jr.

The Halmis, whose names often appear in the credits of vfx-driven TV movies, have worked with Schroder on four previous films. The actor most recently starred in their television version of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, which aired on Ion Television in January.

Schroder made his feature directorial debut with the Native-American boxing movie Black Cloud, and is one of seven directors contributing to a horror anthology film titled Locker 13, which is slated to debut in 2009.
