DreamWorks, Paramount to Reassemble Transformers

It looks like another hot toy line will be making the leap to the big screen in the near future. According to The Hollywood Reporter, DreamWorks and Paramount have acquired the rights to produce a live-action feature based on Hasbro’s Transformers. The movie about the giant morphing robots will be produced by Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto, who also worked on the two X-Men features, along with Lorenza di Bonaventura. DreamWorks honcho Steven Spielberg will executive produce the feature, which is slated for a summer 2006 release.

Toon fans will remember The Transformers from the animated TV series (produced by Hasbro, Marvel and Toei Doga) that ran from 1984 thru 1987 and centered on the battle between good robots led by Optimus Prime and evil ones controlled by Megatron. Wea Corp. released several DVD packages featuring episodes from the series in 2003.
