The 2002 Primetime Creative Arts Awards portion of the 54th Annual Emmy Awards was held on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Among the honors bestowed were the Emmys for animation and visual effects categories.
Matt Groening’s Futurama broke the long wining streak of his own flagship Fox project, The Simpsons, to take home the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program (less than one hour). The episode Roswell That Ends Well also won over installments of Nickelodeon’s As Told By Ginger (Lunatic Lake), Fox’s King of the Hill (Bobby Goes Nuts), and Comedy Central’s South Park (Osama Bin Laden Has Farty Pants). The Simpsons was nominated for the episode She of Little Faith.
The Outstanding Animated Program (One Hour or More) went to the Discovery Channel’s Walking With Prehistoric Beasts. The doc was also up against one of its own, When Dinosaurs Roamed America, as well as Cartoon Network’s Trilogy (Samurai Jack).
Prehistoric beasts also came through for ABC as its Dinotopia snatched the statue for Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Special. The fantasy adventure’s effects work bested that of HBO’s Band Of Brothers — Parts 2 and 4, ABC’s Superfire, and Discovery Channel’s Walking With Prehistoric Beasts.
UPN’s Star Trek prequel Enterprise captured the award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series for the pilot entitled Broken Bow. The episode Breaking The Ice was also nominated, along with WB’s Smallville pilot and two installments of Showtime’s Stargate SG-1: Enemies and Revelations.
