CNET News.com reports that all electronic games have been banned by the Greek government. A law went into effect in late July that imposes heavy fines and prison terms on anyone found in possession of a game in any format, be it a PC, console, GameBoy or mobile phone.
The extreme measure is an attempt to stomp out illegal gambling. Offenders, even tourists, face fines of 5,000 to 75,000 euros (about $4,980 to $74,650) and up to a year in prison.
Protests are anticipated from the Greek gaming community, which is petitioning the law. The first person brought up on charges will go before the courts next week. If a conviction is handed down, opponents plan to take their protest to the European Court.
