Lone Star VFX House Takes Spy Kids For A Ride

For the effects-filled opening sequence of Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, Texan filmmaker Robert Rodriguez turned to Dallas-based Reel FX Creative Studios.

Originally hired to provide around 30 effects shots for the film’s trailer, Reel FX Creative Studios ended up bringing 130 shots to the screen. The 23-member team’s involvement was particularly important since the first 15 minutes would set the tone… and adrenaline level for the film.

The VFX house likens the film’s opening to the prologue in a James Bond installment. It takes place in an amusement park featuring death defying rides with names like The Whippersnapper, The Vomiter and The Juggler — all created digitally by Reel FX Creative Studios with help from Discreet software.

Getting the job required a bit of cloak and dagger on the part of Reel FX. Forgoing the usual pitch procedure, the crew created a spy kit complete with a DVD player, headphones and a cell phone pre-programmed with Reel FX’s number. The DVD wove highlights of Rodriguez’s career with samples from the Reel FX reel. The package was delivered in person with the challenge, “Give us your hardest shot. We will blow you away.”

Other projects on the Reel FX slate include commercials, film and television programs including an upcoming Halloween special for the Disney Channel.
