To follow up Junes well-attended panel discussion, The State of the Industry, ASIFA-Hollywood, The Animation Guild Local 839 and Women In Animation, Inc. will look to the arena of independent production. State of the Industry: Independent Animation will be presented on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Burbank Realty Association Auditorium.
Where as the last discussion featured panelists from major studios, this one will bring together notable do-it-yourselfers including Proud Family Creator/Director and Co-owner of Jambalaya Studios, Bruce Smith; Charles Zembillas, independent animator, character designer and founder for Animation Nation and the Animation Academy; Dave Spafford, owner of Spaff Animation; Effects Animator Sari Gennis (James and the Giant Peach, Fantasia 2000); and veteran animator turned indie producer, Mike Nguyen, whose credits include The Iron Giant. Piet Kroon, an award winning independent animator (DaDA, T.R.A.N.S.I.T.) and co-director of Osmosis Jones, will moderate.
In June, many animators expressed their frustration with pay cuts and the growing lack of opportunities within the studio system. This months event will explore avenues for artists to strike out on their own and bring their creative visions to fruition.
