Viewers who tuned in to Discovery Channel’s documentary Rebuilding Ground Zero last month got a taste of New York-based post house Edgeworx’s well-crafted title sequence and animated maps detailing the architectural information offered in the show. Produced by Nick Davis prods. for New York Times Television, the special debuted as part of the cabler’s special Sept. 11 programming, and focused on the rebuilding process and urban design challenges in lower Manhattan.
Edgeworx employed After Effects and 3Ds max to design, create and render the animation for the special. To create the opener, the outfit used a series of photos taken by Alton Christensen during sundown and incorporated them to create a time-lapse series of the light sculpture tribute to the Twin Towers. The word "Rebuilding" then appears as part of the skyline and treated as part of the cityscape as moving shadows and shadings as the sun sets and the light sculpture gets brighter. In addition, Edgeworx employed 3D camera moves to create animated maps detailing land ownership in the area, an overview of the subway system and a view of the ferry lines.
