For the second year in a row, Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth epic scored the Best Movie Prize at the MTV Movie Awards. The New Line release took home four Golden Popcorn trophies this past Saturday, including best picture, best action sequence, on-screen team (Elijah Wood, Sean Astin) and virtual performance (Gollum, courtesy of the boffins at Weta special effects studio in New Zealand).
Gollum made a special appearance at the Shrine Auditorium ceremony: He snatched his trophy from the hands of actor Andy Serkis, whose voice and movements inspired CG life. In a tip of the hat to Michael Moore’s controversial Oscar-acceptance speech, Gollum then criticized everyone involved in the making of Two Towers, as well as MTV and the audience. Gollum’s fellow CG pal, Star Wars icon Yoda also appeared on the giant screen to accept the award for Best Fight (for his knock-out lightsaber confrontation against Christopher Lee in Attack of the Clones.)
The three-hour awards show will air on MTV this Thursday at 9 p.m. (with several repeat airings to follow, we’re sure!).
