CW Clips Robin’s Wings

DC Comics fans won’t be seeing Robin The Boy Wonder on the small screen as planned. Daily Variety reports that The CW and Warner Bros. TV have dropped the axe on The Graysons, which was to air on The CW. The series was to do for Robin what the show Smallville did for Superman. Smallville is expected to end its long run soon.

The Graysons was to explore young Dick Grayson’s life as part of a family of circus performers, picking up skills that will one day come in handy when he hooks up with Batman and becomes sidekick Robin. Smallville exec producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson were to write and exec produce the series, with filmmaker McG (Terminator: Salvation, We Are Marshall) also serving as exec producer.

Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov reportedly put the show in ice because the studio wants to reassess its approach to exploiting the DC Comics pantheon. Warner Bros. issued a statement saying, “The studio has opted not to go forward with the development of The Graysons at this time as the concept doesn’t fit the current strategy for the Batman franchise.”

Graysons didn’t even get as far as the Aquaman series, which saw a pilot produced but was cut from The WB’s schedule when CBS and Warner Bros. transformed the network into The CW. Robin’s early adventures may eventually make their way to the tube. In the meantime, DC Comics fans can catch the new animated Cartoon Network series Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which premieres on Nov. 14 at 8 p.m.
