Endemol Animating Arab Comic The 99

Endemol U.K. is producing an animated series based on the Arab superhero comic-book series The 99. Published in Kuwait by Teshkeel Media, the controversial comics are heavily inspired by the Koran and involve heroes who derive their powers from the 99 attributes of Allah.

Created by Teshkeel Media Group CEO Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, The 99 hit comic stores in 2006 and has been popular with Muslim readers, though some disapprove of the blending of Islamic culture and religion with superhero lore. Teshkeel is building the first of five planed theme parks around the property and plans to open it in Kuwait in 2009.

The heroes are ordinary teenagers and adults from across the globe, who have come into possession of one of the 99 mystical Noor Stones that grant specific powers that work in unison with others to resolve conflicts. The series aims to promote values such as cooperation and unity throughout the Islamic world, while also reaching out to a wider audience with universal values. The animation will be produced in India, with post-production being completed in the U.K. Endemol Intl. will exercise worldwide rights across all platforms.
