Disney’s return to the video game world known as Tron will be a three-dimensional journey, according to Ain’t It Cool News. The fanboy web destination cites a trusted source that says Disney is shooting the sequel TR2N entirely in 3-D. The project will be one of many 3-D efforts for the studio, whose Bolt recently jumped off the screen. Disney previously converted the stop-motion holiday favorite The Nightmare Before Christmas for stereoscopic exhibition, and is talking about making 3-D versions of classically animated Mouse House features.
The first Tron starred Jeff Bridges as a video game programmer who gets sucked into an arcade machine and has to fight his way through a series of gladiatorial competitions in order to return to the real world. The film is best known for being the first to rely on computer animation and digital environments. The property was later made into a hit video game by Bally Midway. Disney released Tron 2.0, a sequel to the game, in 2003.
TR2N is tentatively slated for release in 2011. At last reporting, commercial director Joseph Kosinski was attached to continue the story, working from a screenplay by Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, writers on the hit ABC series Lost. Steven Lisberger, who co-wrote and directed the first Tron, is producing, along with Live Planet’s Sean Bailey.
