Nintendo announced that its Wii console and handheld DS system sold more than 3.6 million units combined in the U.S. in November, setting new hardware sales records. According NPD Group, an independent entity that tracks video game sales in the U.S., consumers snatched up more than two million Wiis last month, a new all-time record for a non-December month. More than 1.5 million Nintendo DS units flew off store shelves, the second-highest total for a month outside of December.
The Wii console has sold approximately 15.4 million units in the U.S. since its launch in November of 2006, with DS sales reaching nearly 24.6 million since its November 2004 debut.
‘Nintendo’s record-breaking sales demonstrate that consumers are looking for the best value not only among video games, but also among all entertainment options,’ says Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s exec VP of sales and marketing. ‘Shoppers are looking for gifts that can be enjoyed by the whole family, and Nintendo provides an incomparable range of experiences that gets the whole family involved.’
Nintendo systems reportedly represented 66% of all hardware sales in November, including 59% of all console sales and 79% of all portable hardware sales. In addition, four games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top-ten U.S. best-sellers last month.
