Sony, Platinum to Develop Animated Feature

Sony Pictures Animation has signed a deal to develop with Platinum Studios a feature animated film based on characters in Platinum’s library of comic book characters.

Platinum controls the rights to some 5,000 comic book characters. It brought to Sony the rights for the 1997 blockbuster Men in Black and its 2002 sequel. Platinum has recently sold to studios such properties as Atlantis Rising and Cowboys & Aliens, both at DreamWorks; Unique, at Disney; and Dead of Night, at Hyde Park Entertainment. They are also co-developing with Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Motion Pictures films based on the graphic novel Final Orbit and the Top Cow comic book Magdalena.

The deal was announced by Bob Osher, president of Sony Pictures Digital Productions and Hannah Minghella, president of production for Sony Pictures Animation. They made the deal with Platinum CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg.
