Walt Disney’s Race to Witch Mountain finished first in the weekend box office derby, while business took a huge tumble for Warner Bros.’ Watchmen.
Witch Mountain grossed $25 million in its opening weekend, propelled by a strong word of mouth and the appeal of actor Dwayne Johnson. The film arguably rode the appeal of the original 1970s films for parents, who were happy to take their kids to the PG-rated updating.
Watchmen, meanwhile, took in $18.1 million ‘ a decline of 67 percent from its opening weekend, bringing its gross to $86 million.
The only other new release, the comedy Miss March, opened in 10th place with $2.4 million. That was just behind Coraline, the animated stop-motion feature, which took in $2.6 million in its sixth weekend of release to bring its domestic gross to $69 million.
