MegaMind Aims to Stay Ahead at the Box Office

The big brain of MegaMind gets its first major box office challenge this weekend as the DreamWorks Animation feature looks to defend its crown against a trio of diverse newcomers.

The romantic comedy Morning Glory got an early jump on the competition, opening Wednesday in about 2,500 theaters. It’s joined Friday — the day after the Veteran’s Day holiday — by the sci-fi thriller Skyline, at about 2,800 cinemas; and the action film Unstoppable, which is the week’s widest opener by appearing in about 3,200 theaters.

MegaMind’s opening weekend gross was revised down slightly to $46 million from the original early estimates. The film has as of Wednesday made about $52 million domestically and about $21 million overseas. The stereoscopic 3D film again looks to have a strong weekend.

The holiday movie schedule kicks into true high gear next week with the pre-Thanksgiving release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, Part 1. The penultimate cinematic outing for the boy wizard is expected to open in more than 4,000 cinemas, the concluding chapter due to follow in July.
