Animation returns to cinema screens with the release this week of DreamWorks Animation’s MegaMind.
The movie, DreamWorks’ third animated feature release this year, opens in more than 3,900 cinemas and tells the tale of a supervillian who has a mid-life crisis after he finally defeats his arch-nemesis hero.
The film sprang from an idea by Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld, who are executive producers on the film. Tom McGrath directs and the voice cast includes Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross and Brad Pitt.
MegaMind is, of course, being released in stereoscopic 3D and 2D versions. The movie was released last week in some overseas markets and has so far grossed about $7.7 million.
Online prognosticators are estimating the film will open with a weekend gross in the $50 million range.
Other new releases this weekend include the comedy Due Date, opening in about 3,300 cinemas; and the Tyler Perry-directed drama For Colored Girls in about 2,100 theaters.
Holdover competition includes the Halloween-timed horror releases Saw 3D and Paranormal Activity; Red, an action film based on the Wildstorm comic book by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner; and Jackass 3D.
