The Wimpy Kid sequel is tougher than it looks.
The tough chicks of director Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch came in second place in the weekend box office race, earning $19 million in ticket sales. Leading the pack was Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, a sequel based on a series of popular children’s book, coming in with an estimated $24.4 million. Both were new releases.
The animated feature Rango continues to be a strong performer, taking in about $9.8 million in its fourth weekend of release. Rango has earned about $106 million domestic and $73 million overseas for a worldwide total of $178 million.
That puts it ahead of the still-running Gnomeo & Juliet, which made $1.4 million in ticket sales in its seventh weekend out. The film has made $95 million domestic and $60 million overseas for a $156 million total.
The French animated film Mia and the Migoo, which opened exclusively this weekend at the IFC Center in New York, earned about $17,200.
Next weekend sees Illumination Entertainment entering the market with Hop, its second film after Despicable Me.
