Paramount Picks Up Penny Arcade’s ‘New Kid’ For Feature

Paramount has picked up the rights to a webcomic called The New Kid that it plans to develop into an animated feature film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The comic comes from the popular site Penny Arcade, created by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, and tells the story of a young boy who is the lone Earthling at an intergalactic school populated with aliens.

The move comes as Paramount looks to stay in the lucrative animated feature film market. The studio’s distribution deal with DreamWorks Animation is nearing an end and the studio had a hit distributing Rango.

The studio has hired writer Gary Whitta, whose most recent credit is Book of Eli, with Mary Parent and Cale Boyter of Disruption Entertainment producing, the Reporter writes.
