We can all take a deep breath. Pixar has still got its box office superpowers. The studio’s 13th animated feature Brave took the number-one spot at the box office, with a remarkable $66.7 million domestic gross. Pixar’s first movie with a female lead proved to be the fifth best debut of all time for the studio. Brave opened in 10 territories representing about 17% of the foreign market and made $13.5 million, making the global take for the movie about $80.2 million.
The icing on the cake is that the number two movie of the weekend was also an animated blockbuster—DreamWorks’ Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted is still going strong with a $20.2 weekend. The threequel has brought in a total of $157.6 after two weeks in theaters.
In third place was 20th Century Fox’s 3D mash-up epic Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The R-rated film made $16.5 million during its first weekend.
