Nemo’s back, and he’s so excited he’s about to pop right off the screen.
The stereoscopic 3D re-release of the Pixar blockbuster Finding Nemo leads the major theatrical releases this week and looks to pick up business after a lackluster showing in recent weeks. The movie was first released in 2003 to rave reviews and blockbuster business, selling $867 million worth of tickets around the world. The stereoscopic re-release arrives Friday in some 2,900 theaters.

For comparison, the 2009 re-release in 3D of Pixar’s Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on a double bill took in about $32 million worldwide. Earlier this year, the 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace took in about $43 million domestic.

Disney threw a star-studded premiere for Finding Nemo 3D this past week at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. Attending were Pixar chief John Lasseter, director Andrew Stanton, stars Albert Brooks, Willem Dafoe and Allison Janney.

The movie is slated for a 3D Blu-ray release Dec. 4. The only film opening wider is the horror/videogame sequel Resident Evil: Retribution, starring Milla Jovovich and opening in slightly more than 3,000 cinemas.
Still in release is the animated Laika feature ParaNorman. Also still playing in a handful theaters: Summer Pixar entry Brave, Fox’s Ice Age: Continental Drift and DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3.
