Catmull Says Pixar Will Cut Down on Sequels

Here’s some good news for all of us who think that Pixar should be focusing more on original movies instead of relying on the instant appeal of sequels. The much-admired studio president Ed Catmull recently told Buzzfeed.com that Pixar will cut down on the number of sequels in the future, planning one original film a year and alternating sequels only every other year.

“For artistic reasons … it’s really important that we do an original film a year,” says Catmull, who is also president of Walt Disney Animation. “Every once in a while, we get a film where we want or people want to see something continuing in that world — which is the rationale behind the sequel. They want those characters, which means we were successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren’t doing original films.”

“We’re going to have an original film every year, then every other year have a sequel to something,” he says. “That’s the rough idea.”

The next sequel from Pixar, Andrew Stanton’s Finding Dory, is scheduled for November 25, 2015.

Here’s a look at the Pixar’s upcoming release schedule:

The Good Dinosaur. May 30, 2014

Inside Out. June 19, 2015

Finding Dory. November 25, 2015

Untitled Dia de los Muertos Feature. June 17, 2016

Untitled. November 22, 2017

Untitled. June 15, 2018

  1. No problem with that. This means that there will be more creative stories to come. Someday, there might be film adaptations of popular franchises or literature or even company mascots from Pixar. We might just have to wait and see…

  2. How can I say this delicately? Um… PIXAR’S NOT MAKING TOO MANY SEQUELS!! Sorry for that, but just because some people don’t like Pixar’s latest sequels/prequels doesn’t mean they’re doing too many! I knew they’d do more originals anyway, I had no doubt. Keep up your awesome, Pixar… forget what the maybe ten people who didn’t like Cars 2 and Monsters University said…

  3. I wouldn’t mind a sequel as long as it has a GOOD STORY, let’s review an example, toy story 2 & 3, those were fantastic sequels, period, i know pixar puts lots of effort ir their storytelling but to be honest i was put off by “Monsters University” premise, considering that it is a PREQUEL too, sure the animation side of things will be amazing, but to me the whole reminiscence about frat boys and university hardships is not that appealing. Besides we know the characters as much as we can thanks to the first movie, why would we need to learn how Sullie and “Eyelander” become best buddies? that much can amount to be told in a short, not a feature.

Anyways, not criticizing Pixar’s mastership on animation nor storytelling, far from it since i love and respect their artistry and dedication to the craft, i’m sure the MU film will deliver on several levels, but i and many others would be more keen to accept sequels like those from the incredibles universe (because they left room for ti in the end of the movie, even if we have to wait for Brad Bird to finish his tomorrowland movie in 2015), even one for Brave or heck even Wall-E has room for some with good story premises attached and by all means, more original content would be nice!.

Just hoping they won’t let things get out of hand both financially and artistically, like with the poor folks at Dreamworks, with 350 workers “laid off” by the end of this year, and “exciting” little stories like the one from the upcoming “turbo” you have yet to wonder what the hell is their board directive thinking.

  4. Every other year? That’s not cutting down, that’s a really frequent plan, all things considered! Not that I mind, as long as they’re still delivering quality product, but..that if anything is regularizing them!
