‘Iron Man 3,’ ‘Monsters U’ Are China’s Most Popular Pics

Overall movie attendance was up 4.24 percent in Hong Kong in 2013. Audiences spent over $209 million on movie tickets last year, per The Hollywood Reporter. The Chinese movie Unbeatable took the top spot, while Disney/Marvel’s Iron Man 3 was the most popular non-Chinese movie in the top 10, with a $13.7 million total from its two-month release in mid-2013. Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University came in as the second most popular foreign import, with a $9.95 million gross.

Other top performers were World War Z with $5.5 million, Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World ($4.7 million), Man of Steel ($4.3 million) Despicable Me 2 ($4.2 million) and Pacific Rim ($4 million).

A total of 310 films were released in 2013, compared with 301 in 2012. Among these new releases, only 42 were Hong Kong productions, while 268 were imports.
