Guardians of the Galaxy and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles again topped the weekend box office charts having completely ruled the month of August.
Guardians was again tops over the Labor Day weekend, with $22 million in ticket sales from Friday through Monday. That gives the Marvel Studios picture, released by Disney, a $280 million domestic gross. Its overseas total of $273 million gives it a healthy $553 million worldwide gross exactly one month from its Aug. 1 release date.
Second place fell to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which took in $15.7 million in ticket sales for the holiday weekend. That brings its domestic total to $166 million and its international total of $112 million gives it a worldwide gross of $278 million since its Aug. 8 release.
Landing way down in 14th place is the visual-effects-laden sequel, Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which sold $2.8 million in tickets this weekend. That gives it $11.5 million domestic; and the film has grossed $4.6 million overseas.
Just behind Sin City is the re-release of the classic 1984 comedy Ghostbusters, with $2.2 million in domestic ticket sales. The re-release was timed to celebrate the movie’s 30th anniversary.
And with $1.1 million in ticket sales this weekend is Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. That brings its domestic total to $205 million, which when added to a $405 million international gross, gives the sequel a $611 million worldwide total.
