It’s the most spooktacular time of the year! Once you’ve made the rounds, sweated through your greasepaint, racked up way too big of a tab on pumpkin flavored microbrews and had your fill of bumping into Sexy Nurse, Sexy Firefighter and — lord help us — Sexy Pizza, it’s time to slip into to something more comfortable, huddle up on the couch with that bowl of candy you swiped from the neighbor’s porch, and take in some scary cartoon classics. May we recommend:
Blood: The Last Vampire (2000) Hiroyuki Kitakubo; Production I.G
Coraline (2009) Henry Selick; LAIKA
Dead Space: Downfall (2008) Chuck Patton; Film Roman/Electronic Arts
Frankenweenie (2012) Tim Burton; Disney
Monster House (2006) Gil Kenan; Relativity Media/ImageMovers/Amblin Ent.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Henry Selick; Touchstone Pics/Skellington Prod.
ParaNorman (2012) Sam Fell, Chris Butler; LAIKA
Perfect Blue (1997) Satoshi Kon; Madhouse
Vampire Hunter D (1985) Toyoo Ashida; Ashi Prod.
Watership Down (1978) Martin Rosen; Nepenthe Prod.

How is Watership Down a Halloween oriented film?
agreed !
dead bride from Tim Burton
I will have to love any list that features Perfect Blue; and
I do find it amusing you have included Martin Rosen’s Watership Down, as it
definitely has its macabre moments that definitely provide nightmare-fuel for
this season for all things horror.
I do need to dust off my copies of Blood and Monster House and watch at some
point – probably in time for next Halloween!
If you can still find one get the 3D version of Coraline that comes with the red and blue glasses. I was surprised at how well it worked with a regular (non 3D) TV set. I’d found 3D versions of that, Journey to the Center of the Earth (Brendan Fraser version) and Polar Express, which was the worst looking of the lot at Target a couple years back.
Mad Monster Party (1967)
I can’t believe this stop motion animated classic from Rankin-Bass wasn’t name checked (I’m going to guess that the author of this article – Mercedes M. – wasn’t around when this became a movie theatre / tv special feature from the late 60’s to the mid 80’s) …
Since there is enough anime name checked, here goes some more –
Go Nagai’s
DevilMan (1972 tv series)
Devilman: The Birth (1987 ova)
Devilman: The Demon Bird (1990 ova)
Devilman Lady (1998 – 1999 tv series)
Amon: Apocalypse of Devilman (2000 ova)
Demon Lord Dante (2002 tv series)
