HBO has forked over for two seasons of a new animated series from Mark and Jay Duplass (Togetherness), titled Animals. The first two episodes screened earlier this year at the Sundance event, leading to the interest from HBO. The network has acquired worldwide rights to the first season and ordered a second season. Animals is tagged for a 2016 premiere.
An adult-targeted series of half-hour episodes starring downtrodden creatures living in New York City, Animals was created by NYC advertising creatives Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano. Mark and Jay Duplass serve as exec producers through their Duplass Brothers Television banner; Starburns Industries (Rick and Morty) produced the animation.
Matarese and Luciano voice many of the characters in the show, to be joined by guest voices Mark Duplass, Katie Aselton and Nick Kroll.
“Going from having made ‘Animals’ in the supply closet at our day job to making Animals in a supply closet at HBO headquarters is an unfathomable dream come true,” the creators said in a statement.
