So, the Force is definitely with the bottom line for Disney.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens shattered plenty of box office openings in posting a $238 million domestic gross in its opening weekend. Combined with its $279 million foreign gross, the movie sold an astonishing $517 million dollars worth of tickets worldwide in its first three days of release.
The previous domestic record was $208 million, set earlier this year by Jurassic World. However, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was unable to top Jurassic World’s opening weekend foreign gross, which remains the champ with $316 million, nor was it able to top Jurassic World’s worldwide opening-weekend gross of $524 million.
But according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, the movie did set the following records:
- Largest Friday, Opening Day, Single Day: $120.5 million (estimated)
Previous Record: $91 million (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) - December Single Day: $120.5 million (estimated)
Previous Record: $37.13 million (The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey) - Widest December Opening: 4,134 theaters
Previous Record: 4,045 theaters (The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey) - December Opening Weekend: $120.5 million… and counting
Previous Record: $84.62 million (The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey) - Fastest to $100 Million: 1 Day
Previous Record: 2 Days (Jurassic World)
As expected, the rest of the new-movie releases were far behind The Force Awakens, with second-place finisher Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip opening with $14.4 million domestic, while the Universal comedy Sisters was close behind with a $13.4 million domestic bow.
