Sony Pictures Animation has dropped the official trailer for Connected (formerly known as The Mitchells vs The Machines) — a family road trip comedy gone haywire from director Mike Rianda (Gravity Falls) and Oscar-winning producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The LEGO Movie).
The spot introduces the Mitchell family, a typical modern clan drifting apart in an age of perpetual screen time. When the nature-loving dad foists one last road trip on his college-bound daughter, the squabbling family finds themselves fighting a greater threat: a global tech doomsday. In the trailer, we see that this latest Lord/Miller project continues the duo’s tradition of playing with punchy animated flourishes, with the cartoony-yet-slick CG sometimes filtered over by AR-app-inspired doodles and exaggerated caricatures.
…And who doesn’t love a bug-eyed, overweight pug?!
Connected arrives in U.S. theaters on September 18.
Synopsis: When Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson), a creative outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her plans to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (Danny McBride) determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time. Katie and Rick are joined by the rest of the family – Katie’s wildly positive mom Linda (Maya Rudolph), her quirky little brother Aaron (Mike Rianda), and the family’s delightfully chubby pug Monchi – for the ultimate family road trip. Suddenly, the Mitchells’ plans are interrupted by a tech uprising: all around the world, the electronic devices people love – from phones, to appliances, to an innovative new line of personal robots – decide it’s time to take over. With the help of two friendly malfunctioning robots, the Mitchells will have to get past their problems and work together to save each other … and the world!
Director Rianda and co-director / fellow Gravity Falls alum Jeff Rowe penned the script. Lord and Miller produce with Kurt Albrecht; exec producers are Will Allegra and Louis Koo.
