Canadian author Bryan Lee O’Malley’s hit graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim might get a new, animated screen treatment, with a series adaptation in the works with Netflix and Universal Content Production (The Umbrella Academy). O’Malley is writing and executive producing/showrunning with BenDavid Grabinski (Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot); Masaaki Yuasa’s Science SARU studio in Tokyo is tagged to produce the anime should the project receive a series order.
Published by Oni Press, Scott Pilgrim (2004-2010) center on the titular 23-year-old slacker whose perfect life jamming with his band Sex Bob-omb, dating a high school girl and coasting between jobs is turned upside down by a painfully cool rollerblading delivery girl named Ramona Flowers. Scott’s infatuation leads to a series of increasingly crazy showdowns with Ramona’s seven evil exes.
The indie comics hit turned mainstream crossover was adapted as a live-action movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in 2010, starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The movie was written and directed by Edgar Wright, who is on board to exec produced the anime series with producing partner Nira Park, as well as Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff and Adam Seigel (Marc Platt Productions) and the movie’s co-writer Michael Bacall.
Science SARU’s President & CEO Eunyoung Choi (Ride Your Wave, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!) will be the series producer. Spanish animator Abel Góngora, who leads the studio’s digital animation department, has been tapped to direct. His previous credits include serving as an episodic director for Cartoon Network’s OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes and the “T0-B1” installment of Disney+ anthology Star Wars: Visions.
Grabinski is represented by CAA, Kaplan/Perrone Ent. and Bloom Hergott. O’Malley is represented by Fourward.
