The English dub cast for Gidi Dar’s still-painting animated feature Legend of Destruction has been announced, starring acclaimed actors Oscar Isaac, Evangeline Lilly, Elliot Gould and Billy Zane. The film, which tells the story of the first century Jewish rebellion against Rome, was originally released in 2021 and won four craft awards from the Israeli Film Academy, and was also nominated for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
Legend of Destruction begins in 66 A.D. in Roman-controlled Judea, a society polarized by rampant injustice and corruption. When discontent sparks a revolt by the Jews against the bellicose Empire, it ignites into a brutal, years-long civil war that ends in 70 A.D. with the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, beginning the Jewish People’s exile from their homeland.
These historic events are seen through the eyes of a naïve young man named Ben Batich (voiced by Isaac), who becomes a follower of the charismatic rebel leader Bar Giora (Zane).Lilly voices the cunning Queen Berenice, who is determined to save the Temple at all cost, and Gould voices the great sage Rabbi Ben Zakkai.
Rather than being traditionally animated, the film is created out of still paintings — reportedly, 1,500 of them, created by Waltz with Bashir and The Congress artists David Polonsky and Michael Faust. Legend of Destruction is produced by Amir Harel of Lama Films, LOD Productions, Yaki Dunietz and Gidi Dar. Evangeline Lilly and Oscar Isaac (under his Mad Gene Media banner) are executive producing. WME and UTA are handling sales.
