From the Shanghai International Film Festival, sales agency All Rights Entertainment — based in Paris, Hong Kong and Los Angeles — announced its first slate of international rights deals for the animated feature Extinction, produced by Malaysian studio Magic Picture Films (The Elephant King, Princess of Rome). The pic made its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival last week, and makes its Asian premiere as part of SIFF’s Film Panorama program.
Extinction is a CG-animated interspecies buddy adventure with a superhero twist. The film has been picked up by Dazzler Media (U.K.), Magic Film (CIS), Bir Film (Turkey) and Red Cape Distribution (Israel).
The film centers on Mohsen, a young boy who is obsessed with superheroes. When he unexpectedly encounters an endangered tiger while on a family picnic, he is determined to save the day and rescue the majestic creature from hunters — by bringing him home to the big city. Through his mission of “Saving the Last Malayan Tiger,” Moshen and “Tigy” form a deep bond. But even when Tigy is returned to the forest, Mohsen realizes that he cannot hang up his cape when the “Heart of the Forest” and its animal inhabitants still need his help.
Extinction is directed by Behnoud Nekooei from a script by Ali Ramezan. The film’s producer is Hamed Jafari. Amitr Tavassoli composed the original music. Magic Picture is also developing a follow-up television series.
All Rights has previously represented international rights to breakout Chinese animated features including Light Chaser’s White Snake and New Gods: Nezha Reborn as well as Boonie Bears titles from Fantawild.
