Exclusive: Sarah Snook Discusses the Magic of Adam Elliot’s Stop-Motion Movie, ‘Memoir of a Snail’

Actress Sarah Snook (Succession) discusses her experience voicing the main character in Adam Elliot’s acclaimed stop-motion movie Memoir of a Snail in a clip provided exclusively to Animation Magazine.

Memoir of a Snail is about Grace’s journey through life,” she notes. ” I love the fact that the character realizes how strong she is. I hope audiences see something in themselves in Grace, in this tiny little lady who looks a little bit like a snail.”

“I gravitate towards the underdog. People who are perceived as different, marginalized. I am not interested in heroes. It’s probably because I am ultimately making films about myself. I really empathize and identify with my characters,” Elliot told Variety earlier this year. “The truth is, they are all based on real people: they just happen to be my family and friends. In [previous film] Mary and Max, Max was based on my pen pal, who is still alive. Memoir of a Snail has a lot of my mother. We call her a ‘reformed hoarder,’ but she still collects.”

The movie introduces audiences to Grace and Gilbert, a pair of twins who are very close to one another. Grace and Gilbert are separated, however, and then have to find their way back to one another. The office synopsis reads, “Grace Pudel is a book-loving, snail-collecting misfit that falls into a series of misfortunes after being separated from her twin brother Gilbert. Despite her hardships, inspiration and hope arise when Grace begins a friendship with an eccentric elderly woman named Pinky. Memoir of a Snail is a heartfelt and hilarious chronicle of the life of an outsider finding her confidence and silver linings amongst the clutter of everyday life.”

Memoir of a Snail will be released by IFC Films in U.S. theaters on Oct. 25.

You can read our interview with Elliot in next month’s issue of Animation Magazine. (November 2024, Issue no. 344).
