‘Moana 2’ Crests $717M Worldwide, ‘The War of the Rohirrim’ Enters the Box Office Fray

Disney’s Moana 2 continues to ride a wave of box-office success, leading international and domestic charts over this weekend. The animated sequel, directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, continued at No. 1 on the domestic charts in its third week of release, taking in $26.6 million (-48%) on the ripples of it’s record-setting Thanksgiving performance.

Moana 2 joined forces with musical spectacular Wicked to boost the pre-holiday weekend global box office  to $92M, a 21% increase for the same frame last year.

Overseas, Moana 2 is now the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year with $717M worldwide, nosing its prow ahead of Dune: Part Two ($714M). The Disney pic still has a a ways to go to catch up to sister studio Pixar’s record-smashing Inside Out 2 ($1.7 billion). Combined, the two releases have earned Disney the No. 1 animation studio spot for 2024 with $2.4B. Moana 2 is also the fourth-biggest Disney animation release of all time, globally.

The film is expected to sail past the billion-dollar mark. Top five international markets so far are France ($40.5M), U.K. ($33.5M), Germany ($24.8M), Mexico ($23.5M) and Brazil ($21.1M).

Warner Bros. gamble of an anime spin on Tolkien (departing from Peter Jackson’s live-action blockbuster legacy), The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim opened at No. 5, pillaging $4.6M from 2,602 theaters in North America. The slice of Middle-earth apocrypha also opened in 72 markets internationally, adding $4M to reach a $5.7M overseas total ($10.3M worldwide). The project reportedly cost $30M to produce.

Elsewhere on the domestic animation charts, the limited re-release of the AI-remastered Daft Punk anime Intertsella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem came in at No. 9 with $2.328M, released by Trafalgar across 641 theaters. Indie darling Flow by Gints Zilbalodis, released by Sideshow and Janus Films, held onto the top 20 in its fourth week with $374K ($1.3M cume), even climbing back from 17th place last week to 13th in this frame. DreamWorks’ The Wild Robot also had a bounce-back, hitting No. 22 this week after falling to No. 25 and adding $80K to its pot for $142.956M stateside ($323.3M worldwide).
