‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Snares Directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson

Sony Pictures Animation’s Spidey epic has set its directing duo for the third and final installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The threequel will be helmed by returning talents Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson, who have both been involved in the creation of Miles Morales’ multiverse from the beginning.

Plot details on the project are still wrapped up in webbing, as is the planned release date — just yesterday, Deadline reported that Beyond the Spider-Verse will not be released in 2025 as expected. A new release window has yet to be announced.

Persichetti previously made his directorial debut as part of the helmer team on the Oscar-winning first film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and served as an executive producer on the follow-up, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). Prior to boarding the Spidey franchise, the veteran animator’s credits included serving as head of story on A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, The Little Prince (2015) and Puss in Boots.

Thompson was a production designer for Into the Spider-Verse and was elevated to the directorial team for the Oscar-nominated sequel. He previously served as production designer on Sony’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movies, and his credit also include visdev on Smurfs: The Lost Village and The Angry Birds Movie as well as background design supervisor on Star Wars: Clone Wars and The Powerpuff Girls.

The directors told Deadline: “We have had the immense privilege of being part of Miles’ journey from the very beginning, and directing the conclusion to his story is beyond exciting. The creativity and care poured into every minute of this project has been truly inspiring. We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it — we’re bringing everything we’ve got!”

Beyond the Spider-Verse will also welcome back producers Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal and Avi Arad, with Jinko Gotoh joining for the third outing. Executive producers are Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg, and Jessica Berri is co-producer. Lord and Miller wrote the script with David Callaham.
