Madagascar 2 Hits No. 1 Overseas

DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa rolled into major European markets over the weekend and took the top spot at the international box office. Daily Variety reports that the CG-animated sequel earned approximately $50.2 million from 5,129 theaters in 35 markets, outperforming Quantum of Solace, Twilight, Bolt and Wall-E combined for the frame.

Escape 2 Africa took in a whopping $9,787 per theater. The film made an estimated $11 million in Germany, $9.8 million in France and $9.5 million in the U.K. It also scored No. 1 openings in Mexico ($4.2 million), Belgium ($1.6 million), Argentina ($1.2 million), Austria ($1.1 million) and Peru ($1.1 million).

To date, Escape has earned $125 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to around $290 million. The pic has set records for foreign releases in Russia and the Ukraine, and is expected to continue breaking the bank as schools let out for the winter holidays. It will then make way for Disney’s Bolt, which will roll out wider internationally in the new year. To date, the 3-D animal adventure-comedy has earned roughly $9.5 million in nine markets for a worldwide sum of nearly $90 million.
