Director McG will be back at the helm of another installment in the Terminator franchise. Daily Variety reports that Halcyon Co.’s Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek made the announcement at the Dubai Int’l Film Festival. McG’s Terminator Salvation debuts in theaters in May of 2009. Halcyon acquired the Terminator franchise from C2 last year in hopes of reviving the popular movie series that had begun to run out of steam. Actor Christian Bale knows a little about breathing new life into a waning series as part of the team that put a blockbuster shine on the Batman property. He stars in Terminator Salvation and has signed on to play John Connor in two subsequent films.
Terminator Salvation is being released in the U.S. by Warner Bros., while Sony handles the lion’s share of overseas territories. Distribution plans haven’t been set for the follow-up, but Warner and Sony are apparently pleased with the reboot and the positive reactions the trailers have received from the fan base. The strong buzz surrounding the pic reportedly encouraged Anderson and Kubicek to go ahead and greenlight the fifth installment rather than waiting to see how Salvation performed at the box office.
Salvation is the first Terminator film to be made without franchise icon Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is a bit busy upholding his duties as Governor of California. There have been rumblings about a cameo for the former Mr. Universe, but nothing has been confirmed. The trailer suggests that Connor and his fellow survivors battle a more primitive model of mechanized manhunter this time around. It also offers glimpses of a super-sized terminator, which should bring a lot of fun to Halcyon Games’ video game, which will be released in conjunction with the movie.
