Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail held on to the top spot at the weekend box office in its second frame, pulling in a strong $16.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Disney’s newcomer Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience landed in second place, earning $12.7 million and barely edging out the third-place film, Oscar Best Picture winner Slumdog Millionaire, which took in $12.2 million. Slumdog saw a huge bounce since it won the industry’s top honor last weekend, and has grossed $115 million domestically.
Henry Selick’s animated stop-motion film Coraline fell to seventh place, taking in $5.2 million for a domestic total of $61.1 million. Coraline managed to hold on to a few 3-D screens this weekend even as Jonas Brothers took most of them for its release.
The weekend’s othern newcomer, the videogame adaptation Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, took in $4.7 million. That was good enough for eighth place, behind Taken, He’s Just Not That Into You and Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
This weekend’s results are likely to pale in comparison to next weekend’s results, when the long-anticipated comic book adaptation Watchmen hits more than 3,600 screens.
