Lin-Manuel Miranda, writer and star of the Broadway hit In the Heights, has signed a deal to create a musical animated feature for DreamWorks.
The Hollywood Reporter says Miranda is working on the project with Peter Barsocchini, screenwriter on High School Musical.
Bill Damaschke, DreamWorks Animation co-president of production, brought Miranda into the company’s fold and says the studio wants to make the kind of animated musical that DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg made with Disney in the 1980s.
‘Our plan is to do something unique and really innovative,’ Damaschke told the trade. ‘It’s been a long time since there’s been an animated musical that pushed the medium forward.”
Miranda starred in and wrote the music and lyrics for In the Heights, which won Tony Awards for best musical and best original score. He also has acted on shows such as The Sopranos and Sex and the City, and performs with the hip-hop comedy group he co-founded, Freestyle Love Supreme.
