3ds max locked in Mortal Combat

In creating the animated in-game cinematic opener for the upcoming Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Midway employed Discreet’s 3ds max 5 to execute realistic 3D images and martial arts sequences.

Working on a tight production schedule, the small animation team from the Midway Full Motion Video (FMV) department was charged with building elements and scenes ranging from the dark, ominous temple of the powerful sorcerer Shang Tsung to the bright, fiery pits of hell.

The team credits its ability to streamline the production process to the easy customization of the 3ds max interface and the ability to incorporate custom scripts. By incorporating procedural modeling techniques on both characters and environments, the team could make set dressing changes quickly and efficiently. 3ds max’s speed with volumetric lighting and atmospherics also helped the team to keep rendering times low.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance will ship to retailers this fall.
