Shane Black, the writer behind Lethal Weapon and the writer-director of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, has signed on to direct a live-action adaptation of the manga series Death Note.
Produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Brian Witten for Warner Bros., Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry are writing the script.
Created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata, the Death Note manga debuted in Japan in 2003, spawning an anime series that premiered three years later. It has also spawned three Japanese-language feature films, several video games and a light novel. VIZ Media published the manga in the United States.
Series is about a college student who finds a death note that allows him to kill by writing a person’s name while picturing them in his mind.
Warner Bros. landed the rights to a U.S. live-action version in 2009.
