‘Sucker Punch’ Takes On ‘Wimpy Kid’ in B.O. Battle

Zack Snyder is back and he’s hoping his new visual-effects action pic Sucker Punch can knock out a new installment in the popular  kid franchise Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Warner Bros.’ Sucker Punch debuts at about 3,000 cinemas and features visual effects from Quantum Creation FX, The Moving Picture Company, Prime Focus Visual Effects, The Aaron Sims Company, Animal Logic, Pixomondo and Yannix. The film stars Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm and Scott Glenn. Snyder previously directed comic book adaptations 300 and Watchmen and the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole.

Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules opens at more than 3,100 cinemas. This sequel to last year’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid features the return of the cast from the original, which is based on a popular book series by Jeff Kinney. The original grossed $64 million domestic and $11 million overseas.

New Yorkers will have a chance this weekend to see the French animated feature Mia and the Migoo, which opens exclusively at the IFC Center. A national release is set for next month.

Also still in the mix is the animated feature Rango, which has performed well at the box office the past three weekends, as well as Mars Needs Moms and Gnomeo and Juliet.
