It’s good to be the Captain.
Disney and Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened to huge numbers and set a record for an April opening. The most-recent chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe opened atop the domestic box office with an estimated $96 million in ticket sales. It’s grosses overseas — where it has already been playing a couple weeks in some territories — is even more impressive, with a total of $207 million for a global total of $303 million.
No other major films opened against the Marvel juggernaut, which appears to have only gained credibility in the wake of the success of its Avengers movie in 2011.
Slipping from fourth to seventh place was DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which added $5.3 million to its total to take it past the century mark with a domestic gross now at $102 million. Its international take stands at $136 million for a $238 million worldwide total after about five weekends in the marketplace.
The LEGO Movie took in just under a million at $975,000 domestic. That puts its domestic gross at just over $250 million. Its foreign tally is about $160 million, for a $410 million worldwide total.
And still out there is Disney’s Frozen, which did marginal business at $373,000 in ticket sales. Its totals remain impressive, with $1.1 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
Next weekend will see if the birds of Rio 2, the new feature from Blue Sky Studios and Fox, will have what it takes to best Captain America.
