New Details Revealed About Splash Mountain’s ‘The Princess and the Frog’ Makeover

Disney has released new info and images regarding the new Splash Mountain makeover happening at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. The makeover was originally announced in 2021 for both parks, seeing a massive overhaul coming to the ride’s controversial theme that was based off of Song of the South. Disney said that the overhaul had been in the works since 2019.

New details released by Disney shared that the new The Princess and the Frog themed ride would wrap up with “the ultimate Mardi Gras party.” The new details were shared by Charita Carter, a senior creative producer for Walt Disney Imagineering and serving as team lead for the project, in a video that Disney released on August 23, 2021 during the first Princess Week being held in the parks.

Carter says, “Because if Tiana is throwing a party, it is the ultimate Mardi Gras party.”

Speaking further on the Mardi Gras party theme, Carter adds, “Tiana actually invites us, as the guest, to go on an adventure with her in the bayou, and the fun thing about it is we, as the guests, we are active participants in this adventure. So she acknowledges us, and just being the witty person that she is, she takes us through this amazing journey where we get to discover not only characters that we know and love from the film, but this is an opportunity to be introduced to some new characters.”

Some of those characters, new and old, can be seen in a newly released image that displays Tiana in a rowboat and a new set of clothes. On the change in clothing, Carter said, “Now you know she’s regal, so everything she does is beautiful. But yes, she dressed appropriately for an adventure in the bayou.”

Alongside the new theme, Carter also shared that the overhaul would make use of visual effects to create an “immersive environment that is seamless” and advanced audio animatronic figures that enhance the storytelling and “change the game.”
