SC Films Picks Up Queer Filipino Comics Adaptation ‘Zsazsa Zaturnnah’

A powerful new animated hero from the Philippines is ready to make the scene, as SC Films International snatches rights to Zsazsa Zaturnnah vs. the Amazonistas of Planet X.

Based on the cult hit graphic novel by Carlo Vergara, the LGBTQ+ comedy-adventure is brought to live in vibrant 2D by director/animator Avid Liongoren (Hayop Ka!/You Animal) at Rocketsheep Studio (Manila) in league with producer Franck Priot (Holy Cow) at Ghost City Films (Paris).

Zsazsa Zaturnnah vs. the Amazonistas of Planet X

Zsazsa Zaturnnah vs. the Amazonistas of Planet X centers on a shy, small-town gay man named Ada — a salon owner who is in love with his handsome neighbor, Dodong, and confides in his co-worker, Didi. His life is changed when a mysterious comet falls to Earth: Ada is coerced into swallowing the space rock, and is transformed into the voluptuous, headstrong superhero “Zsazsa”, tasked with defeating the extraterrestrial Amazonistas bent on eradicating men from the planet.

“While my main goal is to tell a funny and entertaining story, my advocacy is also to showcase Filipino animation talent to the world. The Philippines is a go-to nation for animation service work but, sadly, we are not known for ideating and producing animated films,” Liongoren told Variety. “There’ve been less than 10 animated feature films in the entire 100 year history of Philippine cinema. My team and I hope to continue adding to our nation’s feature animation filmography and establishing Filipino animators as not just service providers, but creators.”

SC Films hopes to introduce the film in 2024 at either the Cannes or Toronto film confab. Zsazsa Zaturnnah received support from the FDCP-backed ICOF Fund for co-productions.
