Capping off the big toon gathering in Annecy, organizers of the Animation Is Film (AIF) festival announced dates unveiled whimsical poster art for the 2024 edition. The Los Angeles sister event will take place October 18-20 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s key visual was designed by Pavit Panag, an illustrator and animator from Punjab, India who is currently a student at the acclaimed California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Santa Clarita, California. Panag has created the films Umbilical and A Collector of Big and Small Things at the school and is due to graduate next year. The artist shares the poster was inspired by the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale of “The Elves and the Shoemaker.”

AIF launched in 2017 with a mission to embrace “the highest aspirations of animation as a cinematic art form on par with live action” and to advocate for animation filmmakers “who push the boundaries of their work to the fullest range of expression that the medium is capable of.” The festival is produced by distributor-producer GKIDS in partnership with Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Variety.
Over the years, AIF has provided a stateside cinematic showcase for international imports such as Jérémy Clapin’s I Lost My Body, Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai and Nora Twomey’s The Breadwinner, as well as Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Last year, the festival opened with Hayao Miyazaki’s latest Oscar-winning effort The Boy and the Heron and screened the Oscar-nominated Spanish feature Robot Dreams. AIF has also introduced a shorts program, which has hosted Oscar winner Hair Love and Oscar nominees Letter to a Pig and Our Uniform.
