In case you’re keeping score, Gints Zilbalodis’s acclaimed feature Flow just won the César (French Oscar) for Best Animated Feature in France today. The much-acclaimed movie, beat Michel Hazanavicius’s Holocaust-themed drama The Most Precious of Cargoes, and Claude Barras’ Savages. All three titles also competed at Annecy last year. This Sunday, Flow’s popular animated cat (and his friends) will meet their final challenge as they compete for the Best Animated Feature against Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace and Gromit: Revenge Most Fowl and The Wild Robot.
The charming short Yuck!! (directed by Loïc Espuche and produced by Juliette Marquet, Manon Messiant) won the Best Animated Short Cesar. The clever short, which centers on young kids’ experiences with their first kiss in a summer camp is also nominated for an Oscar. The other nominees for this category were Cynthia Calvi’s Gigi and Florence Miailhe’s Butterfly. Yuck! is also one of the five shorts nominated for a Best Animated Short Oscar on Sunday, competing with Beautiful Men, In the Shadow of the Cypress, Magic Candies and Wander to Wonder.
The best Visual Effects Cesar was award to Cedric Fayolle for his work on Netflix’s Emilia Perez, which also won the top prize for Best Feature.
