‘Ne Zha 2’ Closes in on $2 Billion Box Office

China’s brawling toon deity is smashing his way to a stunning new box office landmark, as Ne Zha 2 closes in on $2 billion dollars. The film took in ¥471.9 million ($65.5 million) over the weekend, bringing its global total to $1.98 billion, according to Artisan Gateway. The Coco Cartoon-produced CG sequel is already the highest-grossing animated feature of all time, having surpassed Pixar’s Inside Out 2 last month.

The movie’s weekend numbers also include $7.6M from IMAX screenings, bringing its total to $144M. Ne Zha 2 has recorded more than 15 million admissions to IMAX in China alone, making it one of the top-four top titles for the format worldwide of all time.

IMAX has totted up an overall take of $160M for all films released since Lunar New Year, so Ne Zha is carrying the majority of the box office burden in China. Another animated feature, Fantawild’s Boonie Bears: Future Reborn, is the No. 3 pic with $1.9M this weekend, for a cume of $108.5M.
