Our weekly DVD release coverage would not be complete without a mention of Popeye the Sailor 1941-1943. This Warner Home Video release includes 32 re-mastered but unedited original theatrical shorts starring everyone’s favorite spinach-guzzling mariner. The enduring black-and-white adventures are accompanied on disc by a number of interviews and never-before-seen bonus features.
This third volume in a series of Popeye compilations offers fans their first chance to own some of these early cartoons on DVD. Selections include such favorites as Problem Pappy and Olive’s Sweepstake Ticket, as well as several World War II adventures including A Hull of a Mess, Spinach fer Britain and Seein’ Red, White ‘n’ Blue.
Extras include commentaries and ‘Popeye Popumentaries’ featurettes with animators, historians and others profiling specific cartoons, characters and creators. Fans can also enjoy the retrospective documentary Forging the Frame: The Roots of Animation, 1921-1930, and bonus shorts form the vault. The two-disc set carries a suggested retail price of $34.98.
