Warner Home Video is tempting fans of the hit Will Smith vehicle I Am Legend with a new collector’s edition release loaded with bonus material including the four animated comics that debuted online in conjunction with the film’s theatrical release. Available on Tuesday, the three-disc DVD and two-disc Blu-ray box sets hit retail as Smith and producers begin to talk up their upcoming prequel to the horror-action flick, which earned more than $584 million at the box office worldwide.
Based on Richard Matheson’s classic sci-fi novel of the same name, I Am Legend has Smith fighting CG-animated zombies as a solitary survivor of a plague that devastates New York City and much of the rest of the world. Sony Pictures Imageworks, under visual effects supervisor Jim Berney, handled the lion’s share of the vfx work. The prequel will reportedly take place in the days before the fall of New York as Smith and a small group of survivors fight for their lives against the infected.
The I Am Legend special edition DVD comes with an exclusive 44-page concept sketch book, ten concept illustrations, six art cards showing international cities devastated by the Plague Virus, a lenticular lucite commemorative piece featuring imagery from the film, commentary by director Francis Lawrence and screenwriter-producer Akiva Goldsman, deleted scenes, an alternate version of the film with a different ending, a mini-doc titled Creating I Am Legend, a featurette titled Cautionary Tale: The Science of I Am Legend, two live-action shorts directed by Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith rehearsal footage of the alternate ending, previsualizations of key special effects sequences, a visual effects featurette and a digital copy of the theatrical version. The DVD set lists for $49.92 and a Blu-ray version carries a suggested retail price of $59.99.
